In his young career, David Salsbery Fry is receiving vast attention from leading opera companies throughout the United States. Last season, he made his Nashville Opera debut as Commendatore in Don Giovanni. The Tennessean said, “the voices? They're all marvelous. That includes the frightening passages sung by bass David Salsbery Fry as The Commendatore. I think even Mozart aficionados will agree he brings fresh life to the role.”

Additional engagements from last season include Arkel in a Peter Brook’s version of Pelléas et Mélisande in Tel Aviv and Montreal, his Los Angeles Symphony debut in Handel’s Messiah, a return to New York City Opera for concert performances of Antony and Cleopatra, and Guido in Car Crash Operafor New York City Opera’s VOX Showcase. This season, he makes his role debut Truffaldino in Ariadne auf Naxos at the Tanglewood Festival with Mo. Levine conducting, make his role debut as Blitch in Susannah at Rutgers University, takes part in Lincoln Center’s workshop and performance of Two Boys by Nico Muhly and The Enchanted Island, and performs Handel aria concerts in NYC.

In the 2007-2008 Season, Mr. Fry took part in the Metropolitan Opera’s production of The Gambler, performed Sciarrone in Tosca with Opera Cleveland, T.J. Rigg in Robert Aldridge and Herschel Garfein’s Elmer Gantry in New Jersey, and Sciarrone/Jailer in Tosca with Opera Company of Brooklyn. Additional recent engagements include Commendatore in Don Giovanni with at Théâtre Municipal de Castres in France, Osmin in Die Entführung aus dem Serail with the Aspen Opera Theater Center under thebaton of Arnold Östman, his debut with Opera Cleveland as Fifth Jew in Salome, and his debut in Acis and Galateawith Santa FePro Musica. Of his performance, the Albuquerque Journal said, “As Polyphemus, bass David Fry threw marvelously wild tantrums, while plunging securely down in his range.”

With the Santa Fe Opera, he debuted as Second Soldier in Salomeas a member of Apprentice Program for Singers, and returned for the company’s productions of Daphne and Platée. At New York City Opera, Mr. Fry has performed in Capriccio and Acis and Galatea. Before graduating from the Juilliard School in 2006, Mr. Fry performed Giove in La Calisto, Osmin in Die Entführung aus dem Serail, Peter Quince in A Midsummer Nights Dream, and created the role of Goldsmith in Lowell Liebermann’s Miss Lonelyhearts to unanimous acclaim.

Mr. Fry received a Graduate Diploma in voice from The Juilliard School, a Master of Music in opera from the University of Maryland, and a Bachelor of Arts in music from the Zanvyl Krieger School of Arts and Sciences of The Johns Hopkins University. Originally from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, he currently resides in New York City.
