Biography
Antonio Barasorda has appeared on the stages of the world's major opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera (the title roles in Alfano’s Cyrano de Bergerac and Samson et Dalila, Canio in I Pagliacci, Calaf in Turandot, Luigi in Il Tabarro, Pollione in Norma, Manrico in Il Trovatore, Cavaradossi in Tosca, Radames in Aida), The Washington Opera (Canio), San Francisco Opera (Otello), Teatro La Fenice (Stiffelio), Zurich Opera (Luigi in Il Tabarro), Teatro Verdi di Trieste (Stiffelio), Comunale di Bologna (Gennaro in Lucrezia Borgia), Comunale di Genova, Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid, Teatro des Champs Elysees in Paris (Alvaro in La Forza del Destino), Semper Oper Dresden (Luigi, Radames), Finnish National Opera (Don Jose), Florida Grand Opera (Calaf, Otello, Don Jose, Macduff in Macbeth), New York City Opera (Canio, Calaf, Cavaradossi, Don Jose, Dick Johnson in La Fanciulla del West), Welsh National Opera, Opera de Montreal (Canio, Otello, Don Jose), and Teatro Municipal in Santiago, Chile (title role in Les Contes d’Hoffman)..
He made his operatic debut as Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni in San Juan and subsequently performed the role in Paris, Caracas, Puerto Rico, Hartford, New Jersey, Angers, and Santo Domingo among others. He made his U.S. debut in the title role in Rossini's Il Conte Ory with Opera Theatre of St. Louis and European debut at the Wexford Festival as Mylio in Lalo's Le Roi D'Ys, followed by his Italian debut as Gennaro in Lucrezia Borgia, followed by performances of Fernandoin La Favorita with Cossotto in Caracas, La Traviata with Renata Scotto, Rodolfo in Luisa Miller and Ernesto in Don Pasquale with Enzo Dara.
Notable roles include: Canio, which he has performed in Montreal, Miami, Monterrey, "Live from Lincoln Center", Opera Pacific, Opera Omaha, Kentucky, San Juan, Cincinnati, New York City Opera and the Metropolitan; Calaf (all three versions) in New York, Portland, Detroit, and Miami; Don Carlo in Baltimore and San Juan; Pollione at the Metropolitan Opera, San Diego and Baltimore; Don Jose at New York City Opera, Montreal, Miami, Winnipeg and San Juan; Alfredo in La Traviata in New York, San Diego, Marseilles, Madrid, Genova and San Juan; Pinkerton in Genova, Edmonton, Bologna, San Juan and Pittsburgh; and Luigi at the Metropolitan Opera, Semper Opera, Dresden and Zurich Opera. .
He can be heard on recording as Macduff in Decca’s recording of Macbeth conducted by Riccardo Chailly and featuring Leo Nucci, Shirley Verrett, and Samuel Ramey. This recording was the soundtrack for the film “Macbeth” directed by french director, Claude D’Anna in which he also took part. His performance of Stiffelio at Teatro la Fenice is also preserved on commercially available compact disc recording. He has also recording two albums of popular Latin music: Júrame and Mi amor por ti.
A Puerto Rican of Basque descent, he was invited by the Basque government in 1987 to sing the lead tenor role in the world premiere of Gernika, (sung in Basque) to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the bombing of the Basque capital Guernica in the Spanish civil war. He has recorded " A Portrait of Bolivar", commissioned by the Venezuelan Government to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the birth of Simon Bolivar.
On the concert stage, Mr. Barasorda has earned critical acclaim as tenor soloist with the Casals Festival in the Stravinsky Cantata for Tenor and Horn and in the Verdi Requiem which he has also performed with the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra.
