Biography

Nancy Allen Lundy has earned critical acclaim for her unique vocal beauty, skillful musicianship and theatrical prowess in a wide variety of classical and contemporary styles throughout the world.

Ms. Lundy has graced the stages of the New York City Opera, Houston Grand Opera, The Washington National Opera, Canadian Opera Company, Cincinnati Opera, Hawaii Opera Theater, Minnesota Opera, Opera Pacific, Opera Company of Philadelphia, Opera Theatre of St. Louis, Portland Opera, Spoleto, U.S.A, Teatro Municipal de Santiago de Chile, the Bregenzer Festspeile in Austria, Festival Euro Mediterraneo in Rome, The Netherlands Opera, and Suntory Hall in Tokyo, Japan.

Her operatic repertoire encompasses more than thirty roles, of which she has earned particular acclaim for her portrayals of Poppea in Handel’s Agrippina, Rosina in Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Sophie in Der Rosenkavalier, Curley’s Wife in Of Mice and Men, Gilda in Rigoletto, Musetta in La Boheme, Ann Trulove in The Rake’s Progress, and Cunegonde in Candide, to name a few.

Oscar-winning composer Tan Dun began writing for Ms. Lundy following her success in Peony Pavilion directed by Peter Sellars at London’s Barbican Center, with subsequent performances in Rome and Paris. She premiered his Orchestra Theater IV: The Gate with the NHK Symphony Orchestra. She has sung The Gate and Orchestra Theater III: Red Forecast with the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, London’s BBC Symphony Orchestra as well as orchestras in Duisburg, Ghent, Luxembourg, Brussels, Lyon, Paris, Shanghai, in Sapporo at the Pacific Music Festival, and Lisbon, the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra,. Ms. Lundy created the role of Lan in Tan Dun’s new opera, Tea, in the fall of 2002 in Tokyo, under the direction of Pierre Audi. Other contemporary operas for which she has interpreted include Claire in the American premiere in Peter Bengtson’s The Maids, Caroline Gaines in Richard Danielpour’s Margaret Garner, and Pat Nixon in Nixon in China.

Last season, she appeared in Stockholm as Lan in Tea, at the Brooklyn Academy of Music as Juliet in The Gate. This season includes a return to Stockholm for Barber’s Knoxville, Summer of 1915, the Phoenix Symphony for Carmina Burana, a return to the Netherlands Opera for their production of Marco Polo and performances of Tea in Shanghai, China. This season, she will return to the Netherlands Opera for the world premiere of A Dog’s Life., in which she will also appear with the English National Opera next season along with a return to Hawaii Opera as Lucia.

Notable concert engagements include the Orchestre Symphonique de Montreal for Messiah and Strauss Brentano Lieder with Charles Dutoit, Barber’s Knoxville: Summer of 1915 with the Flemish Radio Orchestra, Mendelssohn’s Elias with the Duisburger Philharmoniker, Bruno Weil conducting, and Villa-Lobos’ Bachianas Brasilieras in Taiwan and with the Richmond Symphony. The demand for her portrayal of the soprano role in Carmina Burana led her to performances with the Philadelphia Orchestra in Philadelphia and Saratoga Springs, NHK Symphony Orchestra (Tokyo), National Symphony Orchestra, Taiwan, and Orchestre Symphonique de Montreal at New York’s Carnegie Hall.

Ms. Lundy is the recipient of an Emmy Award in 2004 for her performance on the telecast of “Fifty Years of Balanchine” on PBS , the Sony ES Award from the Juilliard School, the Tausend Award from New York City Opera and the Sullivan Foundation Award and Career Grant. Ms. Lundy can be seen on Deutsche Grammaphon’s DVD recording of Tea, and on the New Albion label on a CD of songs entitled Dance Hits by Aaron Kernis.
